About the Rotary club of Paarl
Paarl, renowned for its illustrious history and haunting scenery, is situated 57 km from Cape Town in the winelands of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is dominated by mountain ranges and the large granite outcrop of Paarl Rock, after which our town is named. The first settlers in the 17th century called the rock the Parel (Dutch for pearl) for the way it glistened after rain.
The Rotary Club of Paarl was chartered on 27 June 1940. Our Club was the first club established in the Winelands area and currently has 30 members. Since its inception, the club has been involved in the chartering of many other clubs in the area.
In its 82 years, the Rotary Club of Paarl has raised millions of rands for local charities and has established and been involved in some prominent, self-sustaining organisations, like Drakenstein Hospice. Our biggest fundraisers are our annual Wine & Good Taste Auction, and the Winelands Cycle Race. We have also founded five Interact clubs at local high schools, and an Early Act club at a local primary school, to encourage youngsters to learn about service above self.
We meet every Tuesday at 12.30 pm for lunch, fellowship, networking and to listen to interesting and inspiring guest speakers. Visitors are most welcome to attend our weekly luncheon meeting every Tuesday.
Race time: 06h00 – for both routes
